| By: | Harry Warren | | Dates: | 8/7/2016 - 8/7/2016 | | Album Info: | The following photos were taken during the August 2016 "Steamin' Days" Event at the Marshall Steam Museum. It was also a very historic day for the live steam-operating Auburn Valley Railroad since the two 4-8-4 steam locomotives, nos. 401 & 402, would pull a double-header passenger train around the Auburn Heights Estate. The engines have not pulled a passenger train double-header style in nearly 30 years. Locomotive no. 402 was just finished being rebuilt, and this "Steamin' Day" was her inaugural day of operation. Locomotive no. 401, on the other hand, was due for inspection, so this day marked her last run on the rails for a little while, so the double-header was a good jester to both locomotives. After the estate started to close, the Auburn Valley Railroad crew offered me to teach me to drive the 402. As a volunteer of the Marshall Steam Museum and the Auburn Valley Railroad, I already knew how to drive the dual F7A diesel units the railroad purchased in 2013, but I wanted to give driving a live steam locomotive a shot. No. 402 was like a rocket ship, she accelerated very quickly, even with a small pull of the throttle. The last photo of this album, taken by Robert "Bob" Wilhelm, shows no. 402 on the trestle outside of West Yorklyn Station and me sitting on the tender of the locomotive, preparing to stop the train. |
